Minimum wage

Min
Despite what some political rhetoricians say, 85% of minimum wage earners are older than teenagers, and a majority are women, many with children. I can’t fathom living on minimum wage, probably because, well, you can’t. Cheap/publicly subsidized labor is great for employers’ bottom lines though.

The campaign against ISIS

ISIS
I drew many editorial cartoons opposing the rationale for the Iraq War, for which I was dubbed naive, a traitor and worse. I wish I had been wrong, but now Islamic State fighters are massacring their way across the country and into Syria, enabled by the power vacuum created by the toppling of Saddam Hussein.

Banker in cuffs

Banker
More (seemingly) huge fines for banks – this time for manipulating exchange rates – leads a cynic to ask: Are all projected ROIs from banking activities calculated APF (after potential fines)?

New York taxpayers

NY
New York State taxpayers have paid out hundreds of millions for ads to attract businesses to New York State to help offset the high cost of being a taxpayer in N.Y.

Southern migratory species

Guns
Lax gun laws in southern states are the gaping loopholes in rational northeast gun laws. Pretty much all of the criminal gun cases in the tri-state area involve weapons purchased legally (and easily) with no background checks from pawn shops in Georgia, the Carolina’s and Virginia. They are then shipped up I-95 in car trunks to be sold cheaply to people who use them to rob banks, shoot each other and make life generally very dangerous for our police.

Rail corridors

Rail
My grandfather and I used to draw trains together. He once drove big steam engines, and I was in awe. Starving train systems of funds is fine if we’re just subsidizing childish romanticism, but with rising airfares and airport hassles, rail ridership is growing, and inadequate investment is unwise.

Stumping

Jeb
Jeb walked back his unfathomable claim that he’d do Iraq all over again, but not the slightly more problematic statement that Dubya is his go-to Middle East guy.

De Blasio’s vision

de blasio
Mayor de Blasio’s flashy new contract with America is a laundry list of progressive goals for the national Democratic party. While all the very same work lies unfinished back in NYC.

Mystery donors

Clinton
While the Clinton Foundation has some degree of murk when it comes to funding, they are by absolutely no means the worst offenders.

Swan problems

Swans
I thought it was a typo when I read that the New York Department of Environmental Conservation was recommending reducing the “rogue” 2,200 mute swan population in a state that contains almost 20 million humans. Most every morning I’m stuck behind more than 2,200 cars on the LIE — and a swan sighting would be soothing.
