Bennett, 49, of Sea Cliff, is running on the Democratic, Green, Working Families and Women’s Equality party lines. In 2011, she was appointed acting Supreme Court justice presiding over matrimonial cases in the Nassau County Supreme Court, Matrimonial Center. In November 2006, Bennett was elected as a Family Court judge in Nassau County, where from 2007-2011, she presided over cases in the areas of custody, visitation, family offenses, domestic violence, juvenile delinquencies, abuse, neglect and guardianship proceedings. From 2000 to 2006, Bennett was an attorney specializing in matrimonial and family law at Jaspan Schlesinger Hoffman LLP in Garden City. She was made partner at the firm in 2005. From 1992 to 2000, Bennett was an associate at Richard M. Weiner & Associates. She graduated from Boston University in 1989, and received her law degree from Ohio Northern University in 1992. She was admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1992, the New York State Bar in 1993, and the U.S. Eastern and Southern district courts in 1994. She is a member of the NYS Family Court Judges Association, the National Council of Juvenile & Family Court Judges, the Family Court Children’s Center Advisory Committee, the We Care Advisory Board, the Nassau County Bar Association, and the Woman’s Bar Association. Since 2009, Bennett has volunteered as a lecturer for the Parent Education & Custody Effectiveness Program, (PEACE) program at the Nassau County Supreme Court and as a judge in the New York State mock trial program.
