VOTERS GUIDE Presidential, Congressional and Long Island voters guide for Nov. 5, 2024 election

Lisa Shaw

Lisa Shaw is running for Council Member, Town of Shelter Island

Lisa Shaw

BACKGROUND

  • Shaw, 72, of Shelter Island, is running for political office for the first time and is doing so as a third-party candidate. She hopes to be an independent voice on the town board that is currently split with two Democrats and two Republicans.
  • She has served on the West Neck Water District board of directors for 27 years and is a member of the Shelter Island Lions Club.
  • Shaw is a retired teacher and small-business owner and is currently a playwright, writing educational plays for the Shelter Island Historical Society.

ISSUES

  • Shaw said water quality is a key issue and that despite the island’s small size, the different types of water issues can vary by location. She said her “overarching tagline would be ensuring public health through water testing.”
  • She said the island’s infrastructure cannot always handle peak summer traffic, and she hopes to bring different committees and municipalities together to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • She said she would push for Shelter Island to receive the state’s pro-housing certification, attained when municipalities take certain steps to prioritize housing growth.
