John I. McQuade

John I. McQuade is running for Council Member, City of Long Beach

John I. McQuade

JOHN I. MCQUADE

Republican

BACKGROUND:

  • McQuade, of Long Beach, is also running on the Conservative Party line. He manages the law office of his father, Francis McQuade, and managed his father’s unsuccessful race for county district attorney in 2019.
  • The younger McQuade, 27, has a business economics degree from SUNY Oneonta.
  • He said his jobs and civic work gave him skills in budgeting, identifying the right candidates for jobs and negotiating six-figure contracts for companies.

ISSUES

  • Negotiating a settlement with developer Sinclair Haberman can help save money in the city’s appeal of a $150 million court judgment over its breach of contact. McQuade said, "We need to move forward and accept what has happened."
  • McQuade vows to pay attention to race relations, particularly in Long Beach’s Black community, which has complained they are ignored and underrepresented in city government.
  • He said the city needs better communication with residents to avoid problems, such as the outcry that ensued this year after some residents said they were surprised by the construction of a floodwater pump station on Tennessee Avenue.
