Michael A. Delury is running for New York State Assembly - 20th District
MICHAEL A. DELURY
DEMOCRAT
BACKGROUND:
- Delury, 63, of Long Beach, has been the treasurer of East Williston Village for a decade and makes his first Assembly run. He graduated with a business degree from Hofstra University.
- In 2019, as a Democrat, he ran as the Republican candidate for Long Beach City Council, becoming the first GOP candidate elected to the council in a decade. He lost last year’s bid for a second term.
- Delury said as a city councilman he was key in jump-starting a decadeslong dormant $369 million development in Long Beach, where he also helped craft a debt management policy.
ISSUES:
- He said the state’s tax assessment calculations should be frozen every other year so taxpayers don’t have to face higher assessments every year.
- He would fight to bring the Army Corps of Engineers to improve beachfront jetties, install bulkheads and dredge inlets along South Shore communities.
- Students’ health and safety would be a focus, he said, including increasing public school funding to address pandemic-related mental health issues and requiring school safety assessments to be made by outside agencies.
- As for affordable housing, he favors public-private partnerships with successful developers and tax-free bonds.
