VERONICA LURVEY
Democratic
BACKGROUND:
- Lurvey, 53, of Great Neck, is seeking her first term as receiver of taxes after serving as a council member on the North Hempstead Town Board.
- Prior to her work in public service, she worked as a corporate lawyer specializing in leveraged lending transactions and corporate finance.
- She graduated from the University of Chicago and Georgetown University Law Center.
ISSUES:
- Lurvey said the tax receiver’s office needs to collaborate with the community to increase tax literacy and education among residents. She noted that she’s helped bring tax grievance workshops in Mandarin, to reach a population that might not be as comfortable with English.
- She said the office should work toward simplifying and streamlining the process of paying taxes by exploring new digital channels such as text alerts, different payment options and email reminders.
- She said the receiver of taxes can be an advocate for fair and equitable property assessments and evaluations, acting as a checks-and-balance system to Nassau County’s assessment system.
