Brian O. Mealy

Brian O. Mealy is running for Council Member, Town of Southold

Brian O. Mealy

BACKGROUND

  • Mealy, 48, of Mattituck, a registered Democrat, is seeking his second term on the board. He is running on the Democratic and Working Families lines.
  • He served two terms on the Mattituck-Cutchogue school board and is in his third term on the Eastern Suffolk BOCES school board. Mealy is a clerk at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport.
  • Mealy was honored by the town’s Anti-Bias Task Force with the 2018 Helen Wright Prince award for his service to the community.

ISSUES

  •  Mealy said he wants to continue collaborating with developers and contractors to further the town’s bipartisan efforts to increase affordable housing. Two projects are projected to start in the coming year, he said. They include 12 rental units on Love Lane in Mattituck and a plan for 22 ownership units of one- and two-bedroom units on Carroll Avenue in Peconic.
  • He said the town passed legislation in July to conserve water recommended by the Water Advisory Committee. It regulates automatic residential irrigation systems, setting when to water and the use of sensors to prevent overwatering. "We’re proud of it," Mealy said.
  • He would continue updating the town’s zoning code to make regulations easier to understand. It enhances transparency, he said, and ensures development is in keeping with the character of the community.
