Proposition: Suffolk County term limits
Suffolk County term limits
BACKGROUND:
- Voters in Suffolk County will be asked to vote on a referendum to limit the terms of legislators, the county executive and comptroller to 12 years, tightening an existing term-limit law already on the books. A bill to put the referendum on the ballot was approved by the Suffolk County Legislature.
ISSUES:
- The proposition stems from an election issue last year, when a former legislator who previously reached the term limit four years earlier said the language of the law did not prevent her from running again. An appellate court ruled in her favor, but she ultimately lost the election.
