BACKGROUND:
- Burroughs, 47, is a lifelong resident of Hempstead and a1995 graduate of Hempstead High School. He holds an associate degree from Nassau Community College, a bachelor of arts in sociology from the State University at Buffalo and two masters degrees in education from Touro College in Manhattan.
- In 2001, he was signed by the NFL New York Jets but was injured in the preseason. He has been a teacher in the Hempstead public schools for the last 20 years, teaching special education students.
- He has served as a Hempstead Village trustee since 2022.
ISSUES:
- Burroughs said if elected he would ensure the state fully funds public schools. He said he would press for the state to meet its financial obligations and contribute more toward the Nassau Community College operating budget.
- He would vote to increase opportunities for affordable housing in the district with high-density housing such as apartment buildings.
- He said he would work with the state and other leaders to better manage and monitor Nassau University Medical Center including through reforming the hiring of top administrators.
