BACKGROUND:
- Thomas, 38, of Levittown, was elected to the New York State Senate in 2018.
- He is also running on the Working Families Party line. Thomas said that he is the first Indian American in New York history to serve in the State Senate.
- Thomas chairs the Senate Consumer Protection Committee. He is a former Legal Aid attorney and served as an appointed member of the New York State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
ISSUES:
- Thomas said that one of his priorities as a state senator is “public safety and making sure that Nassau County remains the safest county in the nation.”
- Thomas said he wrote a bill that passed this year, setting harsher penalties for gun traffickers.
- In response to the mass shooting in May at a Buffalo supermarket, he wrote another bill that passed this year, raising the minimum age to purchase a semi-automatic rifle to 21 from 18.
- Thomas said he voted to eliminate the state gas tax through the end of the year.
