Jay L. Card Jr.

Jay L. Card Jr. is running for Superintendent of Highways, Town of Shelter Island

Jay L. Card Jr.

Card said that he has cooperated extensively with State Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle (R, C, I-Port Jefferson) and Assemb. Fred W. Thiele Jr. (I–Sag Harbor) during his time in office to satisfy the town’s infrastructure needs, but would also like to request financial support from the county level to help maintain Shelter Island’s roads. He added that he receives assistance on the local level from groups such as the Shelter Island Garden Club, Friends of Trees, and the Shelter Island Country Club to keep the island appearing beautiful. “People say that our roads are in pretty decent shape. We always try to take care of them the best we can.” Card said.

Card, 55, of Shelter Island, is running unopposed on the Democratic and Republican party lines. He first took office in 2012 as the superintendent of highways and the commissioner of public works. Before that, Card received an associate degree in horticulture from Farmingdale State University and was an officer of the Shelter Island Police Department for 20 years. He is married, with three children.
