BACKGROUND

  • Leggio, 62, of Bay Shore, a registered Republican, is running on the Republican and Conservative lines. A U.S. Navy veteran, he spent 40 years working as a bricklayer.
  • He is a 39-year member of the Bay Shore Fire Department and serves as a trustee on the Bay Shore School District's Board of Education.
  • He coached East Islip High School wrestling for 26 seasons and has been elected to the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Lifetime Service to Wrestling honor in 2014 by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

 

ISSUES

  • Public safety is one of his priorities, he said, and supporting law enforcement initiatives. "Having a safe community is huge," he said.
  • He said finding ways to make Suffolk more affordable is a key, such as a longevity program to freeze taxes for seniors or free tuition for students, particularly for low-income kids "to get them that education that they need."
  • He said his experience on the school board has given him insight into budgeting and his work as a bricklayer can help him support infrastructure projects at the county level.
