BACKGROUND

  • Smith, 34, of Holbrook, is running on the Republican and Conservative lines for a fourth term to represent District 5 in the Assembly.
  • Smith graduated from St. Joseph’s University with a degree in mathematics, adolescence education. He is a former state-certified math teacher for grades 7-12.
  • Smith ran a web design company for about eight years and was chief of staff for his predecessor, Assemb. Al Graf.

 

ISSUES

  • Education is a priority for Smith, who is ranking minority member of the Education Committee. He said he wants to expand graduation opportunities to allow career and technical education. He also supports adjusting the Foundation Aid formula to be more responsive to the changing needs of students.
  • Smith said he would also focus on preserving open space and supporting recreational areas. He helped secure funds for an accessible park and playground in Holbrook that’s in progress.
  • Clean water and environmental concerns would also be a priority, he said.
