More than 250,000 teachers and administrators statewide, excluding New York City, were paid $17.7 billion during the 2021-22 school year, according to data reported to the New York State Teachers Retirement System obtained under the state's Freedom of Information Law. With reported payments that range from $550,191.33 down to $1 for the year, that amounts to an average of $72,955.95. Total earnings commonly include payouts for unused sick and vacation days, as well as regular salaries, for individuals about to retire.
