Shifts in Long Island’s population
Brookhaven Town in 2018 had the biggest decrease in population among Long Island towns and cities, 1,057, or 0.22 percent.
Brookhaven Town in 2018 had the biggest decrease in population among Long Island towns and cities, 1,057, or 0.22 percent, following last year's loss of 591 people, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau released on May 23, 2019.
Among villages, Hempstead lost the most people (118, or 0.21 percent), while Lindenhurst lost the biggest percentage, (71 people, or 0.26 percent) for a large village. Some tiny villages lost bigger percentages, but they're so small that a half-dozen people make a big difference.
On the plus side, Port Jefferson gained 316 people, or 4.03 percent, while North Hills gained 229 people or 3.98 percent.
