There are 410,677 former state and local government workers in New York, not counting New York City, who received a total of nearly $10.7 billion in pensions from the state in the 2016-2017 fiscal year, according to data from the state comptroller obtained under the state's Freedom of Information Law. Nassau and Suffolk counties have the most former employees drawing a pension and account for the largest total amount of pension payments in the state system.
This database is based on former employees receiving payment under the New York State and Local Retirement System and as such does not include most part-time or seasonal employees who would not be eligible for pensions.
