Nassau County 2018 payroll

Nassau County paid 15,867 employees or former employees a total of $1,018,356,526.52 in 2018, a decrease of 2.4 percent from the year before.

The number of people making $200,000 or more a year working for Nassau County was essentially flat in 2018, while in Suffolk County the number rose by 23.5 percent.

The count in Suffolk is 1,204, up from 871 the year before, which itself was a 30 percent increase over 2016 and part of a steady rise since 2012. The trend is apparent even if you exclude individuals who retired and received a payout of accumulated sick time and vacation along with other termination pay. In Nassau the number is 656, up about 1.5 percent from 646 the year before. In both counties police make up the bulk of those earning $200,000 or more a year.

Newsday obtained the public payroll data from Nassau County by making a request under the Freedom of Information Law to the county comptroller. The Suffolk data here was gathered from a public website maintained by the county. The police department accounted for the largest portion of that, $468.7 million, followed by Nassau County Community College at $123.8 million. Here are the details.
