FBI data on hate crimes
While FBI figures indicate hate crimes were up nationally and down locally in 2017, the numbers are in doubt.
While the FBI this month reported a 17 percent increase in hate crimes nationally in 2017, the numbers reported to the FBI by Nassau and Suffolk police decreased. But local experts and advocates cautioned that the FBI data, released Nov. 13, does not reflect every police department in the country and does not account for underreporting of hate crimes by victims.
The chart shows the breakdown from the FBI as reported by Nassau and Suffolk police. Suffolk police cover the western half of the county while local forces cover the eastern half. In addition to the four categories shown, the FBI collects data on hate crimes based on gender and disability, but none were reported by any of the Long Island agencies listed.
