Violent crime on Long Island involving guns

Gun-related violent crimes reported by the Nassau and Suffolk police declined in 2018 but rose in Hempstead, according to a report from the state's Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Nassau County police reported 104 violent crimes committed with guns in 2018, representing 10.4 percent of all violent crimes and a 20.6 percent decrease from 2017. In Suffolk, police reported 254 firearm-related crimes in 2018, representing 22.4 percent of all violent crimes and a 26.2 percent decrease from the year before. Hempstead police reported 73 firearm-related crimes in 2018, 22.7 percent of all violent crime and a 25.9 percent increase from 2017.

Those are the three Long Island police departments that report firearm-related crime to the state.
