Crime in Nassau and Suffolk, 2006-2017
There were 35,525 violent or property crimes recorded on Long Island in 2017 by the state's Division of Criminal Justice Statistics, a 7.8 percent decrease from 2016, which followed a 5.7 percent decrease the year before. The division counts violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) and property crimes (burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft) reported by the two county police departments and by 47 town, village and other Long Island police jurisdictions. An increase in the violent crime total in 2015 is attributable in part to the state using an expanded definition of rape that matches one used by the FBI. The Suffolk County Park Police were deactivated in October 2014; their jurisdiction is now covered by Suffolk County Police. This database was updated on July 16, 2018.
