Opt-out numbers for 2021 state math exam

More than half of students across 57 Long Island school districts in grades 3-8 eligible to take the state math exams refused, according to a Newsday survey.

Of the 83,467 eligible students in the districts that participated in the survey, 45,747 — 54.81% — refused to take the exams.

This chart shows responses by 57 districts on the number of students eligible to take the state tests, the number of students eligible to take the Algebra Regents, the number who took the state tests, the number who did not take the state tests and the percentage of those who did not take the state assessments. The number of students eligible for the math tests is often lower than those for English Language Arts because students enrolled in accelerated math may participate in high school math Regents Exams instead of the Grade 7 or 8 Math Test.
