John J. Toomey Jr. is running for New York State Supreme Court Justice

John J. Toomey Jr.

Toomey, 67, of St. James, is running on the Republican and Independence party lines. He is a County Court judge and Acting Surrogate's Court judge. He has presided over the Suffolk County Veterans Court since its inception in 2010. He was a district court judge from 2003 to 2011. He sat on the 10th Judicial Grievance Committee from 1995 to 2002. Toomey was an assistant Smithtown Town attorney from 1976 to 1979 and was a special assistant district attorney from 1983 to 1984, prosecuting town cases. He practiced law as a trial attorney in the Smithtown area from 1977 to 2003. Toomey is an Army veteran, having served as an infantryman in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968, receiving two Bronze Stars. He graduated from Stony Brook University in 1972 and received his law degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1976. He was admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1977. Toomey has been a member of the St. James Fire Department for more than 30 years and is a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association.
