NextLI: Powered by Newsday

research and conversation to shape our future

We will offer high-quality, non-partisan research and analysis about issues facing our region.

About

About us

This website will be a forum for Long Islanders to discuss the future and create consensus around ways to make the region competitive affordable and welcoming.

nextLI will publish new voices with fresh perspectives on how to best position the nation’s oldest suburb for the myriad changes to come. The website will accept submissions in print and video — first-person essays, documentaries, policy proposals, analysis — about life on Long Island that might not be published otherwise. On an island defined by fragmented communities, this digital platform will create a town hall from Belmont Park to the Montauk lighthouse.

nextLI is managed by the Newsday opinion department, with input from an advisory board made up of Long Islanders. It is funded by a charitable project grant from The Rauch Foundation.

FAQ

What is nextLI?

nextLI is a platform for participating in civic life on Long Island.

The project’s website will feature original reporting, research and aggregated data to give users reliable indicators about the region, tools for becoming involved in local politics and context for understanding Long Island.

In addition to publishing research, the project will host discussions and accept writing — first-person essays, policy proposals, analysis — about life on Long Island. On an island defined by fragmented communities, we hope our platform will help amplify voices that might otherwise go unheard in the debate about Long Island’s future.

Who is responsible for nextLI?

nextLI is managed by the Newsday opinion department. nextLI will benefit from the input of an advisory board made up by members of the Long Island community.

The project is funded by a charitable project grant from the Rauch Foundation.

What is the advisory committee and how will it work?

The community advisory committee will help the editorial board identify pressing issues facing Long Island. Board members will refine the focus for research projects, guide our deliberations based on their expertise and help us communicate findings to the community.

We are committed to recruiting an advisory committee that reflects the people who live here. We are seeking advisory committee members who are active participants in Long Island’s civic life and equally familiar with the on-the-ground reality of grassroots organizing as they are with the region’s formal structures of political power.
